in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

letherette step back up with a new release on their own imprint wulf records with ep4. letherette has released music on labels ho-tep and more recently ninja tune, but after starting their own label wulf at the end of last year have already released ep s 1.2,3, brown lounge vol 3 and now ep4. letherettes signature chops can be heard throughout ep4 from the disco cuts of flowatch to the piano slices of feel it. all mastered to cassette this ep centres around the dance floor but stays true to letherettes sound and melodies.

das mysteriöse projekt hype williams ist mit einem neuen album zurück auf big dada. in einem statement zur album ankündigung wurde angegeben dass die ursprünglichen mitglieder dean blunt & inga copeland nicht mehr teil der gruppe seien und ihre letzte gemeinsame veröffentlichung 2011 auf hippos in tanks erschien. die größte aufmerksamkeit bekam das ursprünglich 2005 gegründete projekt bisher für seine ep kelly price w8 gain vol ii, welche ebenfalls 2011 auf hyperdub erschien und große kreise in der welt der elektronischen musik zog.

dc175 comes courtesy of alias, a new project comprising of harvey & ryan mckay, who are two acts who have previously released solo material on the label. harvey mckays last appearance was in late 2016 when he dropped the mad drummer on a-sides vol. 4 whereas ryan mckay s last outing was in 2015 when he appeared on a-sides vol.3 under the name skiver. this is the first collaborative project between the scottish duo under their new moniker alias. the ep opens with pentatonic , a tough sounding track that has been designed for the forward-thinkers. the truth follows up sharply, with vintage piano stabs and a vocal that gives the track abounding energy. the on-point percussion leads you on a trip of pure rapture. the release closes with the apocalyptic dream taker, which is teeming with sinister vocal action and hostile synth work and a sublime way to sign off.

‘this is my chance’ lay dormant until the 90s, when it was included on the ace cd “the heart of southern soul vol 3”. that series was aimed at ballad fans but art gentry’s mid-tempo gem proved ideal for the modern soul dance scene. a 12-inch promo issued at the time is now an in-demand piece of vinyl. mystery surrounds who wrote shirley brown’s ‘even if the signs are wrong’ but this splendid, lilting soul song deserves a vinyl release.

sheffield newcomer atdhe impressed with his soulful remix of kamal imani s cosmic being on recent monologues records release dialogue vol. 2 . can i borrow a feeling is a classy, stripped-back slab of piano-driven deep house, earl st. groove is atmospheric and chugging with more warm melody abounding, and niche dreams rounds off with a hazy low-slung roller. label boss ben gomori injects earl st groove with a galloping tribal rhythm on his remix, honing in on some of those tasty melodies.

aus music follow up a string of releases from shenoda, recloose and marquis hawkes with a disco-tinged 12inch courtesy of a fresh signee and millionhands head honcho tee mango. having so far almost exclusively released on millionhands alone, tee mango makes a rare appearance outside of his home turf and in doing so follows on from his acclaimed ‘imperfections vol.1’ lp which garnered widespread following from the likes of axel boman, palms trax, gilles peterson and bonobo. his ep#1 for aus carries forth the sense of raw, sample heavy soul that was the real spark of imperfections vol.1, while maintaining a feel for the needs of the dancefloor. loose, natural drums, deftly chopped samples and hazy synth lines keepit moody. this collection of 4 tracks could be the perfect soundtrack for those early days of sunshine. as mango himself says. off all the places left to dance, this is where ill stay.

patrick vanos next installment on mos ferry takes you on a journey. industrealized ep is an adventure ride between techno and house with side trips into minimal or psychodelic areas. after his tape jam ep and the following remixes patrick did not sit back complacently. he mixed and compiled selected vibes, vol.5, was part of our mos ferry takeover boiler room in berlin and not to mention the long nights he spent in the studio for this release. the result is quality tunes right to the point.

office vol. 10 ! versatility has got to be iron curtis second name. there are only few other producers on the electronic scene who are able to display such a variety of musical facets as this talented man from berlin. with his maple ep he underlines his reputation of an artist with many faces as his new release is quite a box of surprises: rarley have we heard iron curtis in such a dubby mood.
beginning with the straight and bass centered title track maple iron curtis moves on to the almost beatless and moody collision and the chord driven dub house of entago entery and finishes the ep with the delicate, ambient encore reset me on b2. with its impressive display of variety this record is a celebration of reduced, understated dub techno performed with a distinct musical flair and a clear artistic vision which perfectly fits label owner baaz direction of his office imprint so far. what s surprising is how effortless and natural iron curtis appearance on his long-time friend s record label feels. in such good shape his maple ep is a definitve tip for the lovers of sophisticated and detailed dub techno full of suspense.

voodoo down returns to the compilation series that started it all: possible side effects vol.1, released in late 2012, was the first release on the brooklyn-based label and marked the inception of a concept ep series that would come to define the labels sound. featuring an a1 cut by german journeyman producer stl and rounded out by the label founders’ eclectic techno styles, pse vol. i was the perfect vehicle for the producers still working to carve out their own individual aesthetic. now with a dozen releases under their belt, the founders l estasi dell oro, nconduit and 12 x 12 have returned to their roots and this time recruited the prolific berlin-based producer deadbeat for volume three of the series. like the first two volumes, its a slightly chaotic mix of beefy dance floor tools and heady experimentation. the separate personalities shine through more than ever on this release. vdr always striving to keep things interesting.
